I thought it was springtime in Rutland already but boy was I wrong! Last evening as the rain turned to snow we got to watch a doe and her fawn walk within thirty feet of our living room. The boys stood motionless and the deer seemed to look right at us. The deer meanered through the trees and crossed north, disappearing into the falling snow. I’d guess we got about 5 inches here. If the weather makes the 60s next week as forecasted, maybe I can stir up some dirt. Let’s hope that this time the warmth sticks around.

Our Children’s Well-Being
A 2008 Issue Guide has been prepared for each of North Dakota’s 47 Legislative Districts, as well as the state, in preparation for the 2008 election year. The two-page Issue Guides present data on children’s well-being in North Dakota in the areas of population, family structure, poverty, and parental employment. Check out the report at Kids Count.
Rutland Delegates at State Convention
Appearances from Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were the highlight of the Democratic State Convention held in Grand Forks April 4-6. Steve and Sheila Wyum of Rutland were delegates to the convention and had seats in the second row directly in front of the candidates for their speeches. Steve was fortunate to get to shake hands with both of them as they were working the crowd after their speeches. Obama’s opening line was “Uffda, what a crowd.” (Maybe he’s Norwegian?) As they waited for Hillary to arrive, supporters in the arena started doing the wave which kept up for 15 minutes. An awed and excited little boy, standing by Steve as they were waiting for Hillary to get to them in the line, asked the secret service man if he got to ride in the plane with Senator Clinton and if the plane was nice. Surprisingly, he kindly answered yes to both questions. All in all it was an historic and exciting time for our state. And it is an event that Steve and Sheila will never forget.
Rutland on Today Show
For a brief instant Rutland appeared on the Today Show on Friday, March 14. Lori McLaen and Jen Christianson traveled to New York for a few days on the town. Friday morning they were in the Today crowd holding a Rutland sign. Jen was next to a woman who practically broke down the fence to hug Meredith when she came near. Although Jen missed hugging Meredith, she did get a good photo of Ann Curry who was in for Matt last Friday. They did not make it on the first hour so they can’t be seen on the Today Show website but they have TiVo to prove they were there!
Woolly Women in Forum
Imagine opening up the Sunday Fargo Forum and finding Rutland mentioned on the first page of the Valley R&R Section! That’s exactly what happened when I opened the paper and saw our very own Jan Brash pictured with other “Woolly Women.” Jan has been involved with the “Woolly Women” since 2000 and says she has learned a lot about sheep and working with wool. She also enjoys the camaraderie that the group shares.
Dancin’ The Night – er – Evening Away
Peder and Connie Gulleson love to dance. What do people do who love to dance and have no place to dance? They decide to hold dance nights. The first of these dance nights was January 20 from 7:00 to 8:30. So, for those of us who have a difficult time staying up past 10:00, it was perfect. Two dollars a person covered the hall rental. We danced to a variety of music on CDs and enjoyed visiting in between. This is another activity under the auspices of the Park Board and part of the Rec Program that Rutland is developing. Other dance nights are planned for the first and third Sundays of the month. Look for flyers for exact dates.
