The Rutland Raiders 4-H Club had another strong showing at the 96th Annual Sargent County Fair and 4-H Achievement Days held July 25-28. Club members participated in the Fair starting at 8 a.m. Thursday morning with the horse show and were kept busy right all through the weekend. Several received purple and reserved champion ribbons in both the static and livestock categories and even a couple from the open class competition. Congratulations to all the 4-H Clubs and Members who participated in the Fair and keep up the good work. See you next year at the Fair!

Miss Rutland Jordan Peplinski participated in the Sargent County Fair Queen Pageant on Sunday evening. Jordan, daughter of Dale Peplinski and Ranae Sorenson, was selected as Miss Rutland at the Rutland Fun Night in July. Miss Rutland, and other Queen Candidates, performed several functions at the Fair including awarding the 4-H ribbons to the youth at the pet judging and other competitions during the Fair. Rutland extends its thanks to Miss Jordan Peplinski for representing Rutland so proudly at the Sargent County Fair.

The Rutland Community Club (RCC) has been keeping the town hopping this past week – and plans to continue holding events and activities throughout the summer. The Summer kick-off – Family Fun Night – was held last Thursday, June 6 at the Veterans Memorial Park. Over 150 area residents came to participate in the fun. Michael Mahrer was the grill chef preparing the burgers and hot dogs for the meal. The Community Club provided salad, chips, beverages and dessert. Everyone enjoyed the meal. Katie McLaen, RCC President, emceed the event that started with the announcement and crowning of Miss Rutland Jordan Peplinski and the crowning of Miss Lefse Lucy Mahrer and Mr. Lefse Brody Mahrer (cousins!). Following the royalty crowning, three teams were challenged with the Rutland trivia game covering several events from Rutland history and recent items of interest. The team of Norbert Kulzer, Pam Maloney and Lori McLean won the challenge and were awarded gift certificates to The Lariat Bar and Grill. The KVRR Town of the Year competition continues as Rutland made it to Round 2. Thank you to everyone who voted in the first round – Rutland won by only 28 votes over Hatton, ND. This week Rutland is facing off against Sheyenne. Votes have already surpassed the total from Round 1, but it is another close race. Be sure to get out and vote daily on every device you have. Sunday, May 26, was a day of celebration for two Rutland youths – Tyler Banish and Thomas Mehrer – and their classmates. The Sargent Central High School Graduation Ceremony was held in Forman with a class of ten graduating students. The program included a special music performance of “With a Little Help from my Friends” by The Beatles. Thomas learned bass for the song, Tyler played drums for the first time, and Eric Bergeman kept them all together on the keyboard with the rest of class playing percussion instruments. A video of the performance is available for viewing on the Sargent Central Sports Pictures Facebook Page. Congratulations to all the graduates on your future endeavors.

A large group of family and friends made it to Rutland for the Memorial Day Program on Monday, May 27^th. The American Legion Bergman Evenson Post #215 held events at both the Nordland Lutheran Church Cemetery, which was still accessible by land, but the ground was still inundated from all the rains after the heavy snow, and at the Rutland Cemetery. Following the cemetery visits, around 100 people proceed to City Hall for a short program. American Legion Member Doug Olstad received his five-year service award. American Legion Auxiliary Members also received their member service awards: New Member – Delores Lysne; Ten-Year Members – Wendy Jacobson, Mathea Jablonsky, Donna Kubitz, Diane Smith; Twenty-five Year Member – Sonja Christensen; and Sixty-Year Member award – Lois Breker. Musical entertainment included songs sung by local talent accompanied by Miss Cora Millette. Following the program, a wonderful meal of scalloped potatoes and ham and a variety of salads and desserts were served.

The Rutland Community Club met on Monday, May 13^th, at the Rutland Hall. The new list of work groups will be on the new Rutland website for easier access; the online version will not include telephone numbers; each Chair assigned to an event will have the numbers so they can contact their group members. Katie McLaen will Chair the Memorial Day luncheon on Monday following the program presented by American Legion Bergman-Evenson Post #215 and the Rutland American Legion Auxiliary. There will be a potluck dinner following the morning program. The Club authorized purchase of nine flowerpots to be placed along First Street that will be tended by the area businesses where they are placed. Katie has been checking on the cost of new flags along First Street and due to their cost, she will check on getting a metal sign instead. The Block Party will be held Thursday, June 6, with burgers on the grill and lots of games planned for the event. A Chair is still needed for Uffda Day and should be determined by July 1 to allow the event to happen this year. The annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Hall, hosted by the Leinen Family for the past eighteen years, will be assumed by the Club due to Jeanne’s ‘retirement’. Jeanne’s help will be needed to help organize the event to keep it as exciting and fun as the Hunt’s held for the past many years.

The Uffda Day Committee is looking for the next Miss Lefse and Mr. Lefse! Children aged 5-12 years old are eligible to apply with applications due by Wednesday, May 30^th to Wendy Willprecht in Forman. Contact Wendy with your child’s name, age, address and telephone number along with an answer “Why would you like to be Mr. or Miss Lefse?” The Mr. and Miss will be crowned at Rutland Fun Night on Thursday, June 6. The responsibility of the royals will be to represent Rutland in the Uffda Day Parade that will be held on Sunday, October 6.

The Boys Vocal Group achieved an Outstanding Performance at the State Music Contest.

On Friday, May 4^th, several Sargent Central High School students, their teachers and some parents headed to the North Dakota State Music Contest to display their talents and compete against other students in the Class B section. Sargent Central earned 9 ⭐️ performances at State Music, and also received three Outstanding performances. Congratulations to Eric Bergeman on his flute solo, Thomas Mehrer on his vocal solo, and to the six members of the boy’s vocal group who performed Shenandoah – Tyler Banish, Emmett Bergeman, Eric Bergeman, Ethan Bergeman, Noah Kujanson, and Thomas Mehrer.

When it’s Winter in Dakota, and we’re frozen, cold and blue; When we’re stoking up the furnace and opening up the flue; When it’s Winter on the prairie, and we’re battling ice & snow; We’ll be glad we’re warm and cozy, ‘cause it’s only 15 below.

Tim & Jodi Bogenreif of Moorhead MN were Rutland visitors on the afternoon of Saturday, January 5, calling on 2 of Jodi’s cousins, Paul Anderson and Bill Anderson of this community. Jodi is a granddaughter of the late Rudy & Edna Anderson of Rutland, and one of the daughters of Marilyn Anderson, formerly of Wahpeton and now of Moorhead, and the late Arden C. Anderson, a member of RHS Class of ‘60. The Bogen reifs were accompanied by Jodi’s Mom, Marilyn, by their son, Darien Bogenreif, now a Freshman at The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and by a friend of Darien’s, Miss Gretchen Espedal of Ada MN. During their visit in Rutland, the Bogenreifs accompanied Bill Anderson on a tour of The Old Parsonage at 217 First Street, where they checked out the construction work now in progress and joined the Anderson brothers for an early supper at The Lariat Bar where the Special Of The Day was a steak & shrimp “Turf & Surf” combo.
