Several Rutland residents joined the Sargent County Farmers Union bus trip to the RedHawks game on Thursday, August 15. They joined individuals from Forman, Gwinner, and Lisbon areas for a fun night out at the old ball game. Upon arrival at Newman Outdoor Field, the group scattered toward concessions and their seats. Mike and Debbie Banish paused briefly to decide which concession stand they would visit when they were asked by a RedHawks employee if they would like to upgrade their seats for the game. The Banish’s questioned what, exactly, they would have to do for this upgrade. The woman informed them that they would receive a small cooler with four refreshing Budweiser beers and after the First Inning would simply have to turn toward the camera and toast or click their beers together as the Budweiser Couple of the Day. Although Budweiser is not their primary refreshment of choice, they decided they would be willing to do this small feat and were guided to the seats behind the batter’s box. Their actions were on the “big screen” for the 3,700 attendees to see after the first inning. The actual performance of this action was to last only fifteen to twenty seconds which, they determined, was a lot longer than it would seem. The RedHawks played a good game and ended up winning in the top half of the ninth inning 4-2 against the Sioux Falls Canaries. There was a lot of explaining to do on the return bus trip on how they managed to obtain the prime stadium seats. A good time was had by all at the game.

The Rutland Sportsman’s Club held its 22nd Annual Youth Day at the John Narum Rifle Range by Silver Lake on Sunday, August 18.  About 185 area youth and their families attended the event to take part in activities – shooting bow, BB guns and .22 at various stations and line casting.  As usual, it was a perfect Sunday for the kids.  Hot dogs, popcorn, pop and grilled corn on the cob kept everyone fed. The event concluded with the prize drawings for guns, fishing poles and tackle boxes, tents, hammocks, ground hunting blinds and more. Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to the Rutland Sportsman’s Club members for the annual event.

Hens Do Crow! August 16, 2019

The Sargent County Farmers Union (SCFU) Education Program in Counties (EPIC) event was held at the Coteau des Prairies Lodge south of Rutland on Thursday, August 8. Elementary and teenage youth attended the event to learn about the farm to table process from Kyla Temple of Rutland, the SCFU Youth Director. The kids learned about the wheat planting, harvesting, and flour making process while making some fresh baked cookies. The older kids displayed their talents painting a canvas farm scene and the younger kids got some exercise doing youth yoga. Kyla Temple, SCFU Youth Director, organized the event sponsored by the Sargent County Farmers Union. The day ended with a family meal catered by The Black Pelican of Wyndmere and sponsored by Full Circle Ag of Britton.

Nordland Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School (VBS) started Wednesday, August 7, with Red Willow Bible Camp staff leading the group. The kids had a ball & they showed their stuff at a program on Friday, August 9th, highlighting their busy week.

Hens Do Crow! May 31, 2019

Sunday, May 26, was a day of celebration for two Rutland youths – Tyler Banish and Thomas Mehrer – and their classmates. The Sargent Central High School Graduation Ceremony was held in Forman with a class of ten graduating students. The program included a special music performance of “With a Little Help from my Friends” by The Beatles. Thomas learned bass for the song, Tyler played drums for the first time, and Eric Bergeman kept them all together on the keyboard with the rest of class playing percussion instruments. A video of the performance is available for viewing on the Sargent Central Sports Pictures Facebook Page. Congratulations to all the graduates on your future endeavors.

A large group of family and friends made it to Rutland for the Memorial Day Program on Monday, May 27th. The American Legion Bergman Evenson Post #215 held events at both the Nordland Lutheran Church Cemetery, which was still accessible by land, but the ground was still inundated from all the rains after the heavy snow, and at the Rutland Cemetery. Following the cemetery visits, around 100 people proceed to City Hall for a short program. American Legion Member Doug Olstad received his five-year service award. American Legion Auxiliary Members also received their member service awards: New Member – Delores Lysne; Ten-Year Members – Wendy Jacobson, Mathea Jablonsky, Donna Kubitz, Diane Smith; Twenty-five Year Member – Sonja Christensen; and Sixty-Year Member award – Lois Breker. Musical entertainment included songs sung by local talent accompanied by Miss Cora Millette. Following the program, a wonderful meal of scalloped potatoes and ham and a variety of salads and desserts were served.

Hens Do Crow! May 17, 2019

The Rutland Community Club met on Monday, May 13th, at the Rutland Hall. The new list of work groups will be on the new Rutland website for easier access; the online version will not include telephone numbers; each Chair assigned to an event will have the numbers so they can contact their group members. Katie McLaen will Chair the Memorial Day luncheon on Monday following the program presented by American Legion Bergman-Evenson Post #215 and the Rutland American Legion Auxiliary. There will be a potluck dinner following the morning program. The Club authorized purchase of nine flowerpots to be placed along First Street that will be tended by the area businesses where they are placed. Katie has been checking on the cost of new flags along First Street and due to their cost, she will check on getting a metal sign instead. The Block Party will be held Thursday, June 6, with burgers on the grill and lots of games planned for the event. A Chair is still needed for Uffda Day and should be determined by July 1 to allow the event to happen this year. The annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Hall, hosted by the Leinen Family for the past eighteen years, will be assumed by the Club due to Jeanne’s ‘retirement’. Jeanne’s help will be needed to help organize the event to keep it as exciting and fun as the Hunt’s held for the past many years.

The Uffda Day Committee is looking for the next Miss Lefse and Mr. Lefse! Children aged 5-12 years old are eligible to apply with applications due by Wednesday, May 30th to Wendy Willprecht in Forman. Contact Wendy with your child’s name, age, address and telephone number along with an answer “Why would you like to be Mr. or Miss Lefse?” The Mr. and Miss will be crowned at Rutland Fun Night on Thursday, June 6. The responsibility of the royals will be to represent Rutland in the Uffda Day Parade that will be held on Sunday, October 6.

The 48th Annual Meeting of Rutland Housing, Inc., the non-profit corporation that owns and manages three apartment houses in Rutland, was held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, in the Rutland Town Hall. Manager-Treasurer Bert Siemieniewski delivered the annual report of corporate activities for the past year as well as a financial report that showed a positive balance in the corporation’s books. Ms. Siemieniewski reported that, as of April 3, there were 9 apartments occupied and 5 apartments available for occupancy. She also reported that there are a number of prospective tenants who are expected to move into some of the available apartments in the near future. All three of the company’s apartment houses have undergone major renovations and improvements in the past few years, and work continues on updating and upgrading apartment units as funds are available. Rutland Housing was established in 1971 to provide housing for low income elderly persons in the community utilizing a long-term low interest financing program from the USDA’s Farmers Home Administration. The first apartment house, the four-plex at 207 First Street, was occupied on January 1, 1972. Two more apartment houses, another four-plex at 316 Ross Street and a six-plex at 204 Dakota Street, were built between 1972 and 1975. Rutland Housing’s first Board of Directors included: Earl Anderson; Rudy Anderson; Norbert Kulzer; Aldon Donaldson; and, Skip Sjothun. Kenny Briese was the manager of the Farmers Home Administration program in Sargent County in the early 70’s, and his knowledge of FmHA’s rules, regulations and procedures was instrumental in obtaining the financing to build the apartment houses. Current Directors and Officers of Rutland Housing, Inc., are: Delores Lysne, President; Bill Anderson, Vice-President; Carolyn Christensen, Secretary; and, Bert Siemieniewski, Treasurer/Manager. The next annual meeting of Rutland Housing, Inc., is scheduled for the first week in April, 2020.
