Congratulations to the Rutland Roosters Men’s Slowpitch Softball Team, 2023 North Dakota State Class Rec 3 Champions. The Roosters clinched the title by winning 5 consecutive games against tough opponents at the State Tournament in Grand Forks on Saturday & Sunday, August 12 & 13. The Roosters defeated the Tharaldson Team of Fargo in the Championship game on Sunday afternoon. Members of the Roosters’ 2023 State Championship Team are: Adam Bell, Outfield; Jon Christianson, Outfield; Kirk Fliehs, 3^rd Base; Rylan Gutzmer, Outfield; Todd Hosford, 2^nd Base; Travis Hosford, Outfield; Kris Kann, Pitcher; Nolen Peterson, 1^st Base; Luke Patzlaff, Catcher; Rob Roney, Outfield/Team Captain/Manager; Josh Stenvold, Catcher; Brandon Wyum, Shortstop; and, Jason Phillips, Outfield. According to Rob Roney, a member of The Rutland team, the Roosters finished the regular season with a record of 20 wins and 5 losses. The Rutland community extends its thanks and congratulations to the 2023 Rutland Roosters, the heirs and standard bearers of a winning tradition on the ball diamond that extends back to the end of the 19^th Century. Fans in the community are looking forward to a continuation of that tradition in 2024. Come on out to the ball game at Lou Sanderson Field to watch an outstanding team, and to enjoy some fine ballpark dining at the concessions stand.

The Rutland Roosters Men’s Slowpitch Softball team concluded its 2023 regular season play with two wins on the evening of Tuesday, August 15. After capturing the State Championship in the Rec 3 Class on Sunday, August 13, the Roosters took on the team from Milnor at Lou Sanderson Field on the 15th, taking game #1 in 5 innings by a score of 13 to 3, and putting an early end to game #2 in 3 innings with a 23 to 3 victory. The Milnor matchup was one that had been delayed back at the beginning of the season, and was rescheduled to Tuesday after the Roosters’ scheduled opponent, Gwinner, cancelled out late in the afternoon. Well, regardless of what happened, the Roosters are still the State Champs who ended the regular season with 2 wins at home, and nothing is going to change that.

The Rooster Crows – August 19, 2022

The old saying that, “No news is good news,” does not apply when it comes to rain. As of Tuesday, August 16, there was no news about rain, and that was not good news. Well, the old timers always used to tell us that, “It always rains after a long dry spell,” and once again, the old timers were right! The dry spell had lasted about long enough, and accompanied by just enough thunder and lightning to awaken a person, but not enough to get them out of bed, a little rain was provided early on Wednesday morning. It wasn’t much, Chuck Anderson measured .07 of an inch at his Weber Township farm, and Mike Banish’s rain gauge held .08 of an inch on Wednesday morning, but it was enough to wash off some dust and put a sparkle on the lawn. Surprisingly, the corn and soybean crops still look pretty good, and the 2022 spring wheat crop, although there aren’t many acres, looks pretty good, too. Perhaps Mother Nature is just showing us, once again, that she can be generous or miserly, and there just isn’t one darned thing that we can do about it. Our only choice is whether we complain about what isn’t there, or express our gratitude for what is. We can think about that while we’re vacationing in Florida, Arizona or Mexico this coming Winter.

Capt. & Mrs. Mike Harris departed Rutland on the morning of Monday, August 8, bound for their home at San Diego CA. They planned to make the trip slow and easy but drove as far as North Platte NE on Monday evening. Their second stop was at Colorado Springs CO on Tuesday evening. They arrived safely in San Diego by the weekend. They plan to be back in Rutland after the Captain has been officially debriefed and detached from the U. S. Navy, sometime around the 1^st of November.

The steering committee composed of : Katie McLaen; Mike Wyum; and, Paul Anderson; appointed by investors to complete the purchase of the Lariat Bar and get organized to get the business back in business reports that progress is being made on all fronts. To date, approximately $220,000.00 has been invested in Rutland Improvement LLC d/b/a The Lariat Bar, and it is expected that there are still a few more investors who will be chipping in on the project in the next few days. Committee member Katie McLaen recently sent out a press release to local news outlets and web sites informing qualified persons that those interested in a management position with the enterprise should contact: Paul Anderson @ 701.261.4638; Mike Wyum @ 701.678.3634; or, Katie McLaen @ 701.680.9354. The plan is to be up and running as soon as possible, with a target date of October 1, 2022, or earlier.

Hens Do Crow! August 21, 2019

Several Rutland residents joined the Sargent County Farmers Union bus trip to the RedHawks game on Thursday, August 15. They joined individuals from Forman, Gwinner, and Lisbon areas for a fun night out at the old ball game. Upon arrival at Newman Outdoor Field, the group scattered toward concessions and their seats. Mike and Debbie Banish paused briefly to decide which concession stand they would visit when they were asked by a RedHawks employee if they would like to upgrade their seats for the game. The Banish’s questioned what, exactly, they would have to do for this upgrade. The woman informed them that they would receive a small cooler with four refreshing Budweiser beers and after the First Inning would simply have to turn toward the camera and toast or click their beers together as the Budweiser Couple of the Day. Although Budweiser is not their primary refreshment of choice, they decided they would be willing to do this small feat and were guided to the seats behind the batter’s box. Their actions were on the “big screen” for the 3,700 attendees to see after the first inning. The actual performance of this action was to last only fifteen to twenty seconds which, they determined, was a lot longer than it would seem. The RedHawks played a good game and ended up winning in the top half of the ninth inning 4-2 against the Sioux Falls Canaries. There was a lot of explaining to do on the return bus trip on how they managed to obtain the prime stadium seats. A good time was had by all at the game.

The Rutland Sportsman’s Club held its 22^nd Annual Youth Day at the John Narum Rifle Range by Silver Lake on Sunday, August 18. About 185 area youth and their families attended the event to take part in activities – shooting bow, BB guns and .22 at various stations and line casting. As usual, it was a perfect Sunday for the kids. Hot dogs, popcorn, pop and grilled corn on the cob kept everyone fed. The event concluded with the prize drawings for guns, fishing poles and tackle boxes, tents, hammocks, ground hunting blinds and more. Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to the Rutland Sportsman’s Club members for the annual event.
