The Rooster Crows – December 14, 2018

By Bill Anderson

Santa Claus is coming to town! Jolly old St. Nick is scheduled to arrive in Rutland shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, making his 73rd pre-Christmas visit to the community since flight restrictions were eased after the end of World War II. He might have some tough sledding, though, as a warm-up has been scheduled for the weekend, and the daytime high in Rutland on Friday & Saturday is predicted to be in the upper 30’s. Well, Santa is a clever fellow, and he’ll figure out how to cope with any adversity. The Rutland Community Club will host Santa in the Rutland Town Hall with a reception featuring a soup & sandwich supper, BINGO, crafts and games for the kids, and a chance for the jolly old elf to visit with local children and have his picture taken with them. Christmas hams donated for the event by local Rutland businesses will also be awarded to the lucky winners. Everyone in the community is invited to participate in Santa Claus Day activities in Rutland on Saturday, December 15.

A large and enthusiastic crowd of family and friends gathered in the dining room of The Lariat Bar in Rutland on the evening of Friday, November 30, to celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Jim & Ione Lunneborg of this community. Those in attendance enjoyed a delicious supper of pulled pork, baked potatoes and salads catered by the staff at the bar, as well as reminiscing with good friends about good times throughout the evening. The following report was furnished by Ione: “We were married November 30, 1968, at the Lutheran Church in Cogswell. We lived and worked in Fargo until Jim was drafted, and we then spent a year in Germany where he was stationed at a U. S. Army Base. We returned to the states and moved to the Rutland area in the Fall and started farming in 1971. We moved to our current home place in Shuman Township in October of 1976. Our kids, Eric and Sherry Lunneborg and Marne and Aaron Franklin hosted our celebration at the Lariat. Friends and family joined us to share memories and wish us well. The kids along with our grandson, Noah Ward, were guests at our home for a few days over the weekend. We enjoyed every minute of it!” Thanks to Ione for the report, and congratulations to Jim & Ione for 50 years on the path of life together.

The Rooster Crows – August 31, 2018

By Bill Anderson

September arrived a week early, with morning temperatures bouncing off the 50 mark every day from Saturday, August 25 to Wednesday, August 29, and daytime highs hovering in the 60’s. The forecast calls for a warmup for the Labor Day weekend, but we have been given a taste of things to come. As the late Clayton McLaen often observed, “North Dakota has two seasons: winter; and, getting ready for winter.” There are plenty of pleasant days remaining in 2018, and the wise resident of the northern plains will use at least some of them to get ready for what’s on the way. Dick Meyers has informed The Assembled Wise Men at The Lariat that he is following Clayton’s advice and is getting ready for winter by making airline reservations for a flight to Arizona at the first sign of frost.

Joanne Harris reports that she attended the 60th Anniversary Reunion of her high school graduating class, the Morris High School Class of ’58, on Friday & Saturday, August 10 & 11, in Morris MN. Six decades ago there were 92 graduates in the class, states Joanne, and 62 still survive. Of those, 33 attended the reunion, and 29 were unable to attend, for a variety of reasons. Morris is the county seat of Stevens County MN, and the Stevens County Fair was going on during the same weekend as the MHS Class of ’58 reunion, so there were many old friends from her childhood days in town. According to Joanne, some of her classmates are beginning to show their age, prematurely of course.

RibFest Needs You!

The 10th Annual Rutland Ribfest still needs some rib cookers/vendors for the event on Saturday, August 4. If you or someone you know would like an opportunity to cook and sell ribs as your own fundraiser, get them together quickly and call The Lariat Bar and Grill at 701- 724-3610 to get on the list of vendors.

The event also includes Junk Fest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a good variety and number of vendors.  In addition, there will be a free-will garage sale at the City Hall from 10a.m.-2p.m. with proceeds going to Relay for Life and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They will also serve scallop potatoes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Rutland American Legion Auxiliary will have a pie and ice cream social starting at 3 p.m. at the Senior Center. Bands will also start at Noon so it will be the day to be in Rutland (That is until Uffda Day of course!).

Junk Fest has a new sponsor

The Little Old Ladies of Sargent County have hung their hats for good and will not be sponsoring the Rutland Junk Fest on Saturday, August 4, 2018. BUT there is another group that has agreed to organize the event! The Sargent Central Ambassadors is raising funds for  five students who were nominated by their music and band teacher at Sargent Central to participate in the 2019 Northern Ambassadors of Music tour in Europe next July.

The Northern Ambassadors of Music is a select honor group composed of students from North Dakota and Montana. Tyler Banish, Eric Bergeman, Ethan Bergeman, Kiauna Bergh and Thomas Mehrer were nominated by their Sargent Central choir and band teachers.  The tour includes a concert band, a concert choir and a jazz ensemble. The cost for each of the students for the trip starts at $6,275.00 but that does not include the music, uniforms, required pre-tour camp at NDSU, round-trip ground transportation to/from Minneapolis and many other events and incidentals.

The collective goal is to raise $20,000 for the students. In addition to sponsoring the Junk Fest, the kids are getting crafty making items for sale at Junk Fest, and the group hopes to sell raffle tickets, have a holiday bake-sale (made to order), maybe a dinner concert and other fundraisers over the next few months.

Junkers are being solicited via email, snail mail, and Facebook. Information on the fundraising is available here.  JunkFestInfoLtrPub   Just complete and send the registration form   JunkFestRegis  if you would like to be a vendor at Junk Fest.

If you’re not a junker, come and check out the unique items for sale, check out the freewill garage sale in the Hall, have some scalloped potatoes and ham or ribs starting at noon and a pie and ice cream social starts at 4 p.m. Stay for the music (starts at noon!), ribs and fun throughout the evening. Rutland will be the place to be on August 4!!

Small Town, Big Party

Rutland Fun Night 2018 was another big blast! Thanks to the Rutland Community Club – and party organizer Katie McLaen – for hosting another active and fun get together. Kids and adults alike had a blast (of water) and enjoyed s’mores and more. Just take a look at the pictures – they tell the story on their own.
