The Sargent County 4-H Awards Program was held virtually over Zoom on November 22. The program is usually held in Forman with an audience of members, parents, and grandparents but things were changed this year. The Sargent County Extension Office staff did a wonderful job coordinating the event. The program began with the 4-H Club Leader Awards, the Friend of 4-H Award, and First Year Member Awards. Several 4-H Contest Awards were presented for Crops and Horse Judging, the Horse Quiz Bowl, and the Sargent County Communication Award. The Project Awards, Interview Awards and Membership Awards were presented to deserving youth who had entered the 4-H Achievement Days that were also held virtually in July. Congratulations to the Rutland Raiders 4-H Members who took home over twenty awards in the various categories.

On Saturday, December 5th, The Lariat Bar was going to celebrate owner Pete’s birthday by hosting an ugly sweater party and karaoke. However, with the limited capacity and early closing hours they have decided to change things up. They will still celebrate Pete’s birthday and have an Ugly Sweater Party and Karaoke just a bit earlier. Stop on by for a few drinks, sing a song or two and have a great meal all starting at 3 pm. And do not forget to wear your ugliest sweater and wish Pete a happy birthday! Hope to see you all there!

The Rutland City Council will hold its last meeting of 2020 on Monday, December 7, starting at 5 p.m. Council meetings are always open to the public. Social distancing is maintained.

Santa Claus is making alternative travel and visitation plans during this year of COVID-19. With the change in his plans, the Rutland Community Club will not be hosting a visit to the Rutland Hall this December. Like the Elf on the Shelf this year that has to be quarantined for 14 days before making his rounds, Santa can not squeeze in all the time for the visits with quarantine rules. Santa is making a plan for his safe visits to homes this winter, so you better be good!

The Sargent County Arizona gang was at it again on Monday according to the report received from Curt Larson:

“The following were present for the January Sargent County Breakfast on Monday January 13 at the Golden Corral in Mesa, AZ: Al Ciota and Clarice Ordahl; Jim & Kathryn Gaukler; Duane & Sharon Lock; Richard Meyers & Pauline Carnahan; Pat Prindiville; Clarice Renschler; Harold Young; Gwen Young; and Vincent Young.

Sharon Lock’s granddaughter had given her a book for Christmas called Dakota Attitude by James Puppe. He interviewed someone from every town in ND. Everyone at the breakfast looked up their town to see who had been interviewed.

The Phoenix metro had temps in the upper 60’s today and sunshine. Gotta love it.

Curt and Renee Larson are in Redmond, WA this week watching our four granddaughters. The city where our oldest granddaughter goes to high school had 9 inches of snow during the night; so, No School today for her and her three sisters who attend elementary and middle school in a neighboring city. Temps are in the upper 20’s/low 30’s this week. It’s been fun to be with them this week; however, we are also looking to get back to Arizona for some sunshine and warm weather.

Sonja Christensen reported that as of Monday there are only 36 teams registered for the February 1 Anderson Pinochle Tournament in Rutland. There is plenty of room for more teams — so be sure to register soon. The Tournament is not only a great time to get together, but it is also a fundraiser for Rutland. From February 2007, the 12th annual tourney, to February 2019, the 24th tournament, $9,175.00 has been contributed for the Rutland Community Club. Sonja could not locate the records from the first eleven years but promises some day to figure that out.

The Rutland Community Club will be hosting another fun event on Friday, February 7, at the Rutland Hall. The LineBenders, featuring hometown comedian Shelly (Pherson) Fink, will provide their live improv comedy. The LineBenders have been performing coast to coast since 2001 and will be in Rutland for a great night. Come ready to laugh and enjoy a fun night out! The Lariat Bar will sell homemade pizza by the slice and there will be a cash bar. Tickets at the door are $10.00. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Mark your calendar for a night on the old town!

Congratulations are in order to Abby Erickson, member of the Rutland Raiders 4-H Club, and a member of the Sargent County Hippology Team. Abby got a Third place finish at the Western National Round-Up in Denver in Team Public Speaking with Anna Hoistad from Forman. The team of Kari Fuhrman, Jacy Bopp, Allie Bopp and Kassidy Larson placed 4th in the Horse Quiz Bowl with Jacy finishing as 9th high individual and Kari finishing as 4th high individual.

Sargent Central High School volunteer day was Friday, November 22 (postponed from October due to the snow!). Twelve students helped in Rutland to clean the City Hall, Fire Hall, and Legion Hall. Thanks to the hard working group the City Hall floors shine like they haven’t shined for a while. There were items in the Legion left from Uffda Day that got moved and the Fitness Center equipment in the Legion also got a good cleaning. Seven of the twelve are from Rutland so it was good to get that home-town help.

The Rutland Center Hall kitchen was a busy place on Wednesday, October 16, when ten women gathered to prepare freezer meals. This was the first of two Wednesday-night sessions under the guidance of Katie McLaen, President of the Rutland Community Club (RCC). The RCC has been sponsoring this event for several years. The final session was held Wednesday, October 23. If you missed it this year, be sure to watch for information next year right after Uffda Day.

Workers from Buskohl Construction of Milnor and from Dakota Design Landscaping of Wahpeton took advantage of pleasant weather to work at straightening, reinforcing and improving the appearance of the front porch at 217 First Street on Friday, October 18. The men from Buskohl Construction straightened a sag in the porch floor and installed bracing to keep it straight, while the Dakota landscaping crew placed landscape fabric beneath the porch to deter the growth of weeds and enhanced the appearance of the front of the house by installing lattice work around the base of the porch. The house, built in 1902 by pioneer Rutland businessman C. E. Johnson, is once again a showpiece on Rutland’s Main Street. It is currently owned by Bill Anderson and Kathy Brakke of this community.

The Rutland American Legion served up another fantastic pancake breakfast on Sunday, October 20. Fresh pancakes, eggs, sausage and orange juice was provided for a free-will donation. The Rutland American Legion Auxiliary members helped cook the pancakes and eggs and also held a free-will bake sale. A big thank you is extended to everyone who attended the event this year.

Nine members of the Rutland Raiders 4-H Club went door-knocking in Rutland on Sunday, October 20, to collect for the Sargent County Food Pantry. The Club extends a big thank-you to everyone who contributed food and cash donations for the Food Pantry.

The Rutland City Auditor will be contacting area residents to serve on the Census Committee known as the Sargent County Complete Count Committee. Members will be required to attend training on November 6th (Wednesday) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Gwinner Community Center. From January- April 2020 members will get the word out, plan local events, and meet every two weeks to a month until May 2020. Recruitment will begin soon as there has been no response to the “call” for volunteers. Please say “yes” when you get the call. It is important to get every resident of Rutland counted on the next census!

North Dakota’s Governor declared a Statewide Flood Disaster Emergency on Monday, October 21, as a steady rain dumped another 1.5 inch of precipitation on Rutland and vicinity. Water levels in the Wild Rice River and in many of the large sloughs in the area are as high, or higher, than they were during the flood disaster years of 2009, ’10 and ’11, and several Township and County roads are once again under water. It was noted that those formerly annual problem areas that were improved with the help of an 80% funding grant from the Federal Highway Administration back in 2013 are high and dry during the current flooding but would all be under water if the improvements had not been made 6 years ago. Sometimes spending money saves money, and those road improvements are an example of the truth of that axiom. The western portion of Sargent County is currently dealing with more water problems than is the east, but the excess water is adversely impacting the entire County, according to County Emergency Manager Wendy Willprecht. The Sargent County Emergency Manager’s Office; the Sargent County NDSU Extension Service Office; and, the Sargent County Public Health District; are currently assisting local units of government, farmers & ranchers and homeowners deal with the consequences of the high water. For the County Emergency Manager call 724-6241, Extension 113; for the Extension Service call 724-3355; and, for the County Health District call 724-3725. Reports are that Lenny Runyan, who resides on the old Maly farm at the top of the hills south of Rutland, has placed an order for a shipment of gopher wood, and will commence construction of an ark as soon as it arrives.

On Sunday, October 27, 2:00 p.m., the Rutland American Legion Auxiliary will “Trick or Treat” for gently used clothing (male or female), toiletries and personal care items and cash donations. Items will be donated to the Gladys Ray Shelter in Fargo.

The Rutland Raiders 4-H Club had another strong showing at the 96th Annual Sargent County Fair and 4-H Achievement Days held July 25-28. Club members participated in the Fair starting at 8 a.m. Thursday morning with the horse show and were kept busy right all through the weekend. Several received purple and reserved champion ribbons in both the static and livestock categories and even a couple from the open class competition. Congratulations to all the 4-H Clubs and Members who participated in the Fair and keep up the good work. See you next year at the Fair!

Miss Rutland Jordan Peplinski participated in the Sargent County Fair Queen Pageant on Sunday evening. Jordan, daughter of Dale Peplinski and Ranae Sorenson, was selected as Miss Rutland at the Rutland Fun Night in July. Miss Rutland, and other Queen Candidates, performed several functions at the Fair including awarding the 4-H ribbons to the youth at the pet judging and other competitions during the Fair. Rutland extends its thanks to Miss Jordan Peplinski for representing Rutland so proudly at the Sargent County Fair.

David-1, Goliath-0, so far, anyway. The Rutland Post Office, and other post offices in rural communities, have been saved, at least temporarily. Word was received here on Tuesday, December 13, that the U. S. Postal Service has imposed a moratorium on Post Office closings until May 15, 2012. The moratorium was imposed in response to a request from a substantial number of United States Senators, including those from Montana and South Dakota. Neither John Hoeven (R-ND) nor Kent Conrad (D-ND) were among the Senators requesting the moratorium, an omission that has not gone unnoticed by those engaged in the struggle to maintain services in rural North Dakota. The notice sent out by the Postal Service stated that the review process would continue during the moratorium period, so rural Post Office patrons will still have to pay attention lest they lose their appeal rights during the moratorium period. The hard work and diligent effort of Rutland postal patrons who wrote letters and sent in their comments on the Postal Service’s proposal to close the Post Office here has paid off, at least temporarily, with a moratorium that may lead to a permanent rescue of the local Post Office. Congratulations to the Rutland Community Club for leading the fight. The fight is not over yet, though, as this moratorium is only temporary, so rural postal patrons will have to stay awake and pay attention to make sure that a permanent fix for the Postal Service’s woes is found.

Chuck Sundlie of this community headed off to Palm Springs CA on Sunday Nov. 27, to visit at the home of his parents, Leif & Phyllis (Donaldson) Sundlie. Chuck Traveled via Allegiant Air to Los Angeles, then accompanied his brother, Stan, to Palm Springs. He reports that the weather was very nice, and a few rounds of golf were played. Chuck returned to Rutland on Sunday, December 4, and found the weather here to be pretty nice, too, at least for December.
