Mother Nature bestowed an early Christmas present on Rutland and vicinity by pushing the temperature into the upper 30’s, nearly to 40 degrees, on the first 2 days of Winter, Saturday, December 21 and Sunday, December 22. The forecast for the rest of the week is for a little cooler weather, but nothing that could be categorized as unbearable. There is still enough snow for Santa’s sleigh, and that’s what counts.

Shawn Klein, Manager of the Sargent County Bank’s Rutland Station, hosted a Christmas Open House for Bank Patrons on Friday, December 13. Shawn served coffee, hot cider and an assortment of cookies to those who stopped in. Bank patrons also participated in a door prize drawing during the open house. Door prize winners were: Karla Breker; Vern Liest; Jim Lunneborg; Lyle Erickson; Mary Ann Levery; & Dave Bladow. Shawn, as well as the Bank’s management & staff, extends best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year to the Bank’s many customers in the Rutland community.

Rutland Postmaster Lori McLaen also treated patrons of the local Post Office to a Christmas Open House on Wednesday, December 18. Patrons who stopped in were treated to Christmas cookies, punch and a big “Merry Christmas” from Lori. Although the U. S. Postal Service is currently running an advertising campaign touting as one of its benefits that “You’ll never have to go to the Post Office again,” here in Rutland a visit to the Post Office is a rather pleasant experience that folks here don’t mind at all.

Hens Do Crow! August 2, 2019

The Rutland Raiders 4-H Club had another strong showing at the 96th Annual Sargent County Fair and 4-H Achievement Days held July 25-28. Club members participated in the Fair starting at 8 a.m. Thursday morning with the horse show and were kept busy right all through the weekend. Several received purple and reserved champion ribbons in both the static and livestock categories and even a couple from the open class competition. Congratulations to all the 4-H Clubs and Members who participated in the Fair and keep up the good work. See you next year at the Fair!

Miss Rutland Jordan Peplinski participated in the Sargent County Fair Queen Pageant on Sunday evening. Jordan, daughter of Dale Peplinski and Ranae Sorenson, was selected as Miss Rutland at the Rutland Fun Night in July. Miss Rutland, and other Queen Candidates, performed several functions at the Fair including awarding the 4-H ribbons to the youth at the pet judging and other competitions during the Fair. Rutland extends its thanks to Miss Jordan Peplinski for representing Rutland so proudly at the Sargent County Fair.

The Rooster Crows – August 3, 2018

Those hazy, lazy, crazy days of summer are here at last – clear skies, warm nights, warmer days and the prairie wind holding its breath until it can decide which way to blow. The corn and soybean crops are still green and growing, getting taller, fuller and more magnificent by the day. Wheat fields are now burnished golden amber waves of grain, some almost ready to be cut, and some ready. Kurt Breker tried a field near Cayuga on Monday, July 30, but decided to give it another day or two. By the time this column appears in The Teller a lot of wheat will have been cut, threshed and either hauled to on-farm storage or straight to a grain terminal in town. Although wheat is no longer the dominant crop it once was on the northern plains, it is still a major cash crop and an important component of many crop rotation plans. Good old North Dakota hard red spring wheat is still the best wheat for making the flour that makes our daily bread, and for that every North Dakotan can, and should, be truly thankful.

Hal Nelson, sports correspondent for The Rooster Crows, reports that the Rutland Roosters Men’s Slowpitch Softball team played the Lidgerwood team in the final home games of the 2018 regular season on Tuesday evening, July 24, at Lou Sanderson Field. It was a beautiful evening, Hal states, and the field was in great shape, with the outfield grass as thick and lush as a green plush carpet. A mild breeze out of the northwest helped hold the mosquitoes down, and the fly balls in mid-air, allowing the outfielders time to get under them without having to swat mosquitoes and catch flies at the same time. The Roosters cruised to a 23-13 victory in 5 innings in game #1, but had a tougher time in game #2, squeaking out an 18-15 come from behind win in extra innings. The Rutland team was down by 3, 12 to 15, in the 7^th inning, Hal reported, but tied the game up in the 7^th, and then scored 3 more runs in the 8^th to seal the victory. Congratulations to the Rutland Roosters Men’s Slowpitch Softball team on another successful season, and thanks to Hal Nelson for another good report.
