Uffda!

The 29th Annual Rutland Uffda Day will be held next Sunday, October 6, 2013!  This is the day when the population in the town of 163 swells to over 1,000 — maybe 2,000 — people who come to celebrate the Scandinavian ancestry of Rutland.

Residents have been busy making over 3,000 lefse to be served at the Hall dinner and for sale for visitors to take home and enjoy later.  Other goodies include sandbakkels, krumkake and rosettes.  Visitors can enjoy freshly make abelskievers, Uffda Day Tacos, scalloped potatoes and ham dinner, brats, rommegrot and other edibles.  There are plenty of other things to do during the day as well including:

  • Pioneer demonstrations: hardanger, quilting, embroidery, wool spinning, ice cream and ropemaking
  • Antique tractor demonstrations
  • Classic & antique car show
  • Horse drawn rides
  • Arts & crafts sales
  • Pioneer house & museum
  • Musical entertainment
  • Games & train rides for children
  • Wine tasting
  • 5K walk/run (starting at 9 a.m.; registration at 8:30 a.m.)
  • Nordland church service at 9am
  • Parade at 1:00 pm

Musical entertainment this year will include the NorSweDane Dancers.  The NorSweDane Dancers perform Nordic dances to traditional Scandinavian dance tunes. This exciting group is made up of dancers from Fargo-Moorhead Scandinavian clubs and they are coming to Rutland.

New this year to our events will be the pig races at 2:00 p.m.

Kids can have fun bouncing around in the inflatables, and playing a variety of games and other activities across from the Hall.

Plan to be in Rutland next Sunday.  Come meet old friends and make new ones.  Rutland is always the place to be the first Sunday in October!

Booya

When I was younger, I remember going with my grandparents to many fall Catholic Church booya festivals where hundreds would attend.  Booya was made in several large pots – generally about 50 gallons each  – and there would be beef, chicken and pork cooked in the broth.  Vegetables were added, usually carrots, potatoes, and celery along with a variety of seasonings.  Generally booya takes several days to prepare to get it ‘just right’ before the soup (or stew) was served in bowls.  Those were always fun festivals and Church fundraisers.  Of course, they always included games for the kids and adults too which made it all the merrier.

Seafood BoilThe Coteau des Prairies Lodge is hosting a Seafood Boil on Sunday which sounds a lot like an old fashioned booya but they have an added twist (and no bowls!).  The Seafood boil starts with cooking the vegetables and then adding sausage and seafood (and maybe other meat) to the kettle.  When the meal is ready, they simply dump it down the middle of the table and voila’ it becomes finger food!  Sounds like a great time and fun for everyone.

Veteran’s Memorial

The Rutland American Legion Post #215 and the Legion Auxiliary have been working on a project to honor Rutland’s home-town heroes. A joint committee was formed to plan a veteran’s memorial to be erected in Rutland.  The Legion and Auxiliary have been working on several small fundraisers for nearly two years and have already received more than $6,000 in contributions.  The fundraisers have included bake sales, pancake breakfasts, raffles and a pie and ice cream social at Rutland’s Ribfest.  They are currently selling tickets for a quilt raffle and in June will be coordinating the food for the Relay for Life Tractor Drive and also for a private auction.

The first phase of the Veterans Memorial project is estimated at about $12,000.  The project, located between the City Hall and American Legion Building, will begin with the cement base and a pyramid tower nearly 16′ tall with names of area veterans.  The project is set to begin this summer while the group continues to raise funds.

If you are interested in contributing toward this project, please send contributions to Joan Lee, American Legion Auxiliary President, at 9829 143rd Avenue Southeast, Cayuga, ND 58013.  Names of veterans are being compiled but if you have a name to be included, please let Joan know.  The group does not want anyone to be excluded.

We will have future posts with the proposed sketch and related information as this wonderful project comes to fruition.

Tractor Drive

Tractor Drive 2013  The Sargent County Relay for Life (RFL) planning is well underway with the main event in June (in Gwinner).   In 2012, two teams hosted a Tractor Drive with 55 entries.  Jim’s Journey is hosting the event this year on Saturday, June 8, and they hope to have even more participants.  The drive starts – and ends – in Rutland so be sure to get your registration mailed in for an eventful day. All proceeds go directly to RFL.  If you don’t have a tractor to enter, come to town and spend the day with us.

It is once again time for the Annual Rutland Uffda Day event in our small town of Rutland. [Click for 2012 Uffda Day Flyer.] This is the one day of the year when the population swells to over 1,000 plus.  Everyone in town has been pitching in for several months to prepare for the big day.  Nearly 4,000 lefse have been rolled; krumkakke and sandbakkels have been baked and shaped; rosettes are done.  Now starts the preparation for the big dinner at the Hall.

This year our parade at 1 p.m. will feature the Aberdeen Bagpipe Band as well as many classic cars as part of the show.  If you are in the area, come on and join the fun.  The weather is never an issue — come rain or shine it’s a good ‘ole time in Rutland on Sunday.

Youth Day

On Sunday, the Rutland Sportsman’s Club held its annual Youth Day at the John Narum Rifle Range by Silver Lake.  Over 200 area youth and their families attended the event to take part in activities – shooting bow, BB guns and .22 at various stations and also line casting.  As usual, it was a perfect Sunday for the kids.  Hot dogs, popcorn, pop and grilled corn on the cob kept everyone fed.  The highlight of the day (beside all the prizes awarded to about 40 kids), was the exhibition shooting by Tom Knapp – “The Shooting Star.”  Kids and experienced hunters alike were wowed by the trick shots and amazed at his shooting skills.  He started by throwing and shooting apples, oranges and potatoes in the air.  Then he moved to briquettes and even a one-inch square billiard chalk cube.  There was, of course, the sales pitch for Americase and Federal Premium ammunition and also comments about safety, responsibility and good sportsmanship during the presentation. Knapp finished the program with a salute to the military with the red, white and blue and the big finale.  It was another fantastic day near Rutland.
