The Rooster Crows – Aug. 26, 2022

A very welcome rain fell on Rutland and vicinity on the morning of Friday, August 19. Even Kurt Breker’s perennially drought parched fields near Cayuga were blessed with 1.1 inch of cool, clear rainwater. Norbert Kulzer reported that his rain gauge registered 1 inch when the rain had stopped falling, while the gauge of his next door neighbor, Roger Pearson, showed only .65 of an inch. Mike Wyum reported that he has 3 rain gauges in the garden at his Ransom Township farm, and that one of them held .9, one held .95 and one held 1.1 inch. Mike says that he’s adding them all together, dividing by 3 to get the average, and then rounding up to arrive at a full inch of precipitation. Harvey Bergstrom reported 1½” at the Bergstrom farm 2 miles south of Cayuga, and Chuck Anderson reported that his rain gauge showed 1.02” after the rain had stopped and the clouds had cleared away at his farm in Weber Township. It is reported that cornstalks in local fields are “…smiling from ear to ear.” Some more rain wouldn’t hurt, but no one is complaining right now.

Chuck & Mary Beth Anderson; Mike & Phyllis Wyum; Alan & Doreen Olstad; and, Mark & Kathy Wyum; boarded a bus at Forman sponsored by the Sargent County Farmers Union on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 17, for a trip to Fargo to attend a F-M Red Hawks baseball game at Newman Outdoor Stadium. The Red Hawks took on the Sioux Falls Canaries, and whipped ‘em by a score of 7 to 0. Well, you wouldn’t expect a canary to do very well in a contest with a Hawk, anyway, would you? All who made the trip report that the afternoon at the ballpark was very enjoyable.

Rutland natives Mike & Diane Kulzer, now of Fargo, were visitors in their old home town from Friday, August 19 to Monday, August 22. They visited Diane’s mother, Phyllis Erickson, and helped her with some chores around the house during their stay. Mike also did some repair work on the deer stands on his hunting grounds near Rutland.

Family, friends and neighbors got together at the Coteau des Prairies Lodge on Saturday, August 20, to celebrate Curt & Judy (Lee) Silseth’s 50^th Wedding Anniversary. The Party was organized by the Silseths’ 3 children: Jill; JJ; and, Christie; and Curt & Judy didn’t know that the party was for them until they got there. The Silseths’ many friends in the Rutland community congratulate them on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary, and extend best wishes to them for many good years to come.

Hens Do Crow! August 16, 2019

The Sargent County Farmers Union (SCFU) Education Program in Counties (EPIC) event was held at the Coteau des Prairies Lodge south of Rutland on Thursday, August 8. Elementary and teenage youth attended the event to learn about the farm to table process from Kyla Temple of Rutland, the SCFU Youth Director. The kids learned about the wheat planting, harvesting, and flour making process while making some fresh baked cookies. The older kids displayed their talents painting a canvas farm scene and the younger kids got some exercise doing youth yoga. Kyla Temple, SCFU Youth Director, organized the event sponsored by the Sargent County Farmers Union. The day ended with a family meal catered by The Black Pelican of Wyndmere and sponsored by Full Circle Ag of Britton.

Nordland Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School (VBS) started Wednesday, August 7, with Red Willow Bible Camp staff leading the group. The kids had a ball & they showed their stuff at a program on Friday, August 9^th, highlighting their busy week.

Hens Do Crow! July 19, 2019

Rutland is not a dying town but a town that tie-dyes as evidenced by over 80 people who attended the Rutland Community Club Groovy Art in the Park event on Thursday, July 11^th. Rutland residents were joined by families from Havana, Forman, and other towns for a fun night. Kids and adults alike tie-dyed T-shirts, socks, and bags with many outstanding designs and lots of color. Even the adults got some color, especially Bryce Carlson who had some beautifully colored legs thanks to his playful kids. The grass in the Veteran’s Memorial Park provided some color and many a child had colorful feet before they left. The Community Club provided refreshments and beautiful t-shirt cookies and multicolored cupcakes. Thanks to the Community Club and to everyone who attended to make this a successful event. The Rutland City Council reconvened on July 11 to award the bid for the Emergency Lagoon Repair 2019 Project. Two firms bid on the project and City Engineer Tracy Eslinger, from Moore Engineering, summarized the bids for the Council. The Council voted to award the contract to D.L. Barkie Construction of West Fargo for a Total Base Bid of $174,599 plus Alternate 1 (Crossover Pipe and Gate Valve Bid) of $22,488 for a total project estimated cost of $197,087.00. Acceptance of the bid is contingent upon approval of the Clean Water State Revolving Fund and Community Development Block Grant for the additional funds to cover the increased costs. The City Council will hold its next meeting on Monday, August 5 when the 2020 preliminary budget will be approved, as required by State Law; the final budget is required to be adopted after a public hearing no later than October 10.

Hens Do Crow! – June 14, 2019

The Rutland Community Club (RCC) has been keeping the town hopping this past week – and plans to continue holding events and activities throughout the summer. The Summer kick-off – Family Fun Night – was held last Thursday, June 6 at the Veterans Memorial Park. Over 150 area residents came to participate in the fun. Michael Mahrer was the grill chef preparing the burgers and hot dogs for the meal. The Community Club provided salad, chips, beverages and dessert. Everyone enjoyed the meal. Katie McLaen, RCC President, emceed the event that started with the announcement and crowning of Miss Rutland Jordan Peplinski and the crowning of Miss Lefse Lucy Mahrer and Mr. Lefse Brody Mahrer (cousins!). Following the royalty crowning, three teams were challenged with the Rutland trivia game covering several events from Rutland history and recent items of interest. The team of Norbert Kulzer, Pam Maloney and Lori McLean won the challenge and were awarded gift certificates to The Lariat Bar and Grill. The KVRR Town of the Year competition continues as Rutland made it to Round 2. Thank you to everyone who voted in the first round – Rutland won by only 28 votes over Hatton, ND. This week Rutland is facing off against Sheyenne. Votes have already surpassed the total from Round 1, but it is another close race. Be sure to get out and vote daily on every device you have. Hens Do Crow – March 1, 2019

Mother Nature has not been playing nice lately and I know I am getting tired of the snow. The snowfall and ground blizzard on February 24th resulted in some area events being postponed or cancelled. The Rutland Community Club Fun Night has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 10, same time (4-6 p.m.) at the Rutland Hall. The Rutland Sportsman’s Club cancelled the Fishing Derby at Silver Lake but the Club’s drawing will be held once all the sold tickets are received. The next snow event that is predicted for Friday, March 1, is the date of the Rutland Sportsman’s Club Fish Fry but that won’t stop this event from happening. The Sargent Central Clay Target League members will be holding their bake sale fundraiser that evening so be sure to head in early. Serving starts at 5:30 p.m.

The Rutland Community Development Corporation (RCDC) had to postpone their January 30th meeting to February 20th at the Rutland Senior Center. Several members attended but, due to weather, the turnout was less than planned. The Lariat Bar is current on the loan payments with the RCDC and those are the only two loans out at this time. The RCDC has money that is available to be invested in the community if any individual or entity is interested in establishing a business in town. Calvin Jacobson and Jake Erickson were both elected to another term on the RCDC Board and Cam Gulleson was elected to fill the remaining two-years of the term held by Sam Gillespie.
