Spring has sprung or at least the calendar says it has. Looking outside our windows certainly shows another season that just does not want to end. That last punch of winter left a mess everywhere. Most people knew it was time to stay home. There were a few brave – or crazy – souls that ventured out in the storm and some required rescue which brought more out to the crazy winter. School was cancelled Friday to the delight of the school kids. The State highways and area roads had five-foot or more snowdrifts.  The state brought in snowblowers to help clear the blocked highways and area farmers were clearing farmsteads and township roads to get out. By Saturday afternoon, some areas were close to back to normal but it was a longer recovery. I think it is safe to say that everyone is done with winter. Come on Spring and Summer!

Roads were clear on Saturday, March 16th, so several Rutland residents headed over to Forman for a Legislative Forum sponsored by the Sargent County Farm Bureau and the Sargent County Farmers Union. Senator Jim Dotzenrod and Representatives Sebastian Ertelt and Kathy Skroch made it to Forman through the morning fog. Each of the District 26 Legislators discussed proposed legislation and bills. The Prairie Dog Bill will bring some of the oil money to the non-oil counties and cities but funding may not come until 2021. The State will be taking over social services from the counties. The plan is to have 19 zones rather than each of the 53 counties providing social services. Ransom, Richland and Sargent Counties are working together to establish a consolidated social services for the three counties. The deadline to have something established is January 1, 2020 or the State will dictate how and where the services are provided. Some of the other topics covered included long-term care funding, the Trespass bill, Medical Marijuana, and the State Veterans Home funding.

Hens Do Crow – March 8, 2019

Paul Anderson departed Rutland on Thursday, February 28, bound for Fargo to catch a flight out to Seattle WA to pay a visit to his new grandson, Rhys (pronounced Reese) August Elfering. Rhys is the son of Paul’s daughter, Katie, and her husband, Josh Elfering. He was born on Thursday, February 14, and, according to Paul, he is already making noise, sleeping, eating and performing his other duties like a pro. Paul expects to be back in Rutland by Thursday, March 7.

Roger & Sharon Pearson returned to their home here on the evening of Thursday, February 28, following a month-long vacation in the Mesa AZ area. Roger & Sharon were the guests of their daughter and son-in-law, Brenda & Roger Gibbon, from February 1 through the 28th. Father and daughter attended the Sargent County Breakfast at The Golden Corral in Mesa on Monday, February 11, and enjoyed getting together with old friends from home. Roger reports that the weather in Mesa was cooler than normal, but quite a bit warmer than the sub-zero temperatures they left behind in Rutland. Roger states that they were sure happy to find that there was still plenty of Winter to enjoy when they got back home.

When it’s Winter in Dakota, and we’re frozen, cold and blue; When we’re stoking up the furnace and opening up the flue; When it’s Winter on the prairie, and we’re battling ice & snow; We’ll be glad we’re warm and cozy, ‘cause it’s only 15 below.

Tim & Jodi Bogenreif of Moorhead MN were Rutland visitors on the afternoon of Saturday, January 5, calling on 2 of Jodi’s cousins, Paul Anderson and Bill Anderson of this community. Jodi is a granddaughter of the late Rudy & Edna Anderson of Rutland, and one of the daughters of Marilyn Anderson, formerly of Wahpeton and now of Moorhead, and the late Arden C. Anderson, a member of RHS Class of ‘60. The Bogen reifs were accompanied by Jodi’s Mom, Marilyn, by their son, Darien Bogenreif, now a Freshman at The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and by a friend of Darien’s, Miss Gretchen Espedal of Ada MN. During their visit in Rutland, the Bogenreifs accompanied Bill Anderson on a tour of The Old Parsonage at 217 First Street, where they checked out the construction work now in progress and joined the Anderson brothers for an early supper at The Lariat Bar where the Special Of The Day was a steak & shrimp “Turf & Surf” combo.

Hens Do Crow – October 12, 2018

Margot Ganske of Park City UT arrived in Rutland early in the morning of Thursday, October 4, after arriving in Fargo on the 11:00 p.m. flight from Minneapolis. Mrs. Ganske is an Uffda Day volunteer, and, as she is the identical twin sister of Uffda Day Chairperson Marcia Brakke, her presence enabled Marcia to be in two places at one time.

It takes planning, timing and coordination to make a family trip these days. Ross & Miranda Kulzer, accompanied by 7-year-old Lilah and 5-year-old Cohn, arrived in Rutland early in the afternoon of Friday, October 5, at the end of a journey that had Ross starting out from San Jose CA on Thursday afternoon, and Miranda, Liah and Cohn commencing their trip at Kalispell MT that same afternoon. The family was reunited in the Minneapolis Airport and arrived at Hector Airport in Fargo at 11:00 at night. After a night in a Fargo hotel, they made the remainder of the trip to Rutland via automobile. Both Ross and Miranda are employed by an electronics manufacturing company that markets its products all over the world and requires a lot of travel of its employees, so they know how to make the transportation system work for them.

The 34th Annual Uff-Da Day Fall Festival in Rutland is coming up this Sunday, October 7. There has been some concern expressed about the weather, but, the old saying is, “The Sun always shines on Rutland, even when it’s raining!” and this year will be no exception. Rain or shine; warm, cold or somewhere in between; the show will go on! Uff-Da Day will begin with the Uff-Da Day Classic 5k Run/Walk, commencing at the intersection of First and Cooper Streets (County #10 and #3) at 8:00 a.m. followed by the opening of the craft booths by 10:00 a.m. Demonstrations, food stands and dinner at the Rutland Town Hall are all scheduled to be up and running by 11:00 a.m. The Uff-Da Day Parade will be stepping off at its assembly area on Dakota Street at 1:00 p.m., with candidates for public office of all political persuasions, from County Commission to U.S. Senate being prominently featured, and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull is scheduled to take place on Main Street, right after the parade and the Nickel Scramble, at about 2:00 p.m. There will also be one of the best antique and classic car shows in the region, horse drawn wagon and buggy rides throughout the day, as well as inflatable games for the kids. Demonstrations of pioneer crafts will be going on throughout the day. At 3:00 p.m. the First Annual Uff-Da Day Nor-Ski competition will pit teams of 4 cross country skiers against each other with the winning team to receive bragging rights for 1 year and other fabulous trophies. Unlike most cross-country ski races, though, this one will put all 4 team members on the same pair of skis at the same time. The Kulzer Family Team of Kalispell MT has challenged all comers, so get your teams and strap on those skis! Lefse Lena and the Rommegrot Queen will be on hand all day long at the Senior’s Center to show folks how to create those Scandinavian staples the old-fashioned way, the way Grandma made them. Over in the Rutland Fire Hall, the Park Board will be serving up Uff-Da Tacos, something that Grandma and Grandpa never heard of, but which they would have wished that they had. Visitors can pick up a free copy of the 2018 issue of The Rutland Leader that contains more information about Uff-Da Day activities and events, as well as local history, at the Information Booth on Main Street. Uff-Da Day XXXIV chairperson Marcia Brakke, and the entire Uff-Da Day Committee, invite everyone who enjoys good food, good friends and a good time to come on over to Rutland on Sunday, October 7, for Uff-Da Day XXXIV. Uff-Da Day XXXV is scheduled for the first Sunday in October, October 6, 2019.

The Prairiewood Vineyard & Winery of Elliot ND has presented an Uff-Da Day wine tasting display of its North Dakota vintages on the porch of The Old Parsonage for the past several years, but, with The Old Parsonage up in the air, the Uff-Da Day wine tasting will be held in the Pioneer House, just south of The Rutland Depot Museum, on the west side of Main Street. John & Julie Steffes, owners of Prairiewood Vineyard & Winery will also have their North Dakota wines on sale, by the bottle or by the case. Try it, you’ll like it.
