The Friendly Garden Club Digs In

Well, you know spring and summer are not far off when The Friendly Garden Club starts up again. This year the group of gals from Rutland, Havana and Cayuga met on St. Patrick’s Day to start talking plants and flowers. Attendees received a quick presentation on perennials for the garden (mostly information gathered from BH&G’s website and from some suppliers) and handouts courtesy of the local Extension Office. We all enjoyed cake and beverages with a St. Patrick’s Day theme of course. The group meets on the third Monday of each month at the bank building.

More Than 200 Served

It may not be a McDonald’s slogan but it sure is an accomplishment to be proud of! The Nordland Lutheran Church had another successful Palm Sunday dinner with more than 200 individuals attending. The ham, potatoes and veggies were followed by a vast selection of delectable homemade desserts. Several who attended the dinner also stayed to play the Sunday afternoon bingo offered at the Senior Center.

The Rooster Crows – March 21, 2008

By Bill Anderson

Temperatures ranging from the upper 40’s on Thursday, March 13, to 52 on Friday, down to 27 on Saturday, back up to 43 on Sunday, up to 52 on Tuesday and no snow on any day that it was predicted. As of Sunday, March 16, most of the snow in Rutland was gone, revealing a display of brown lawns decorated with bones, tree branches and beer cans that must have come down with the snow, because they sure weren’t there when the first snowfall covered things up back on December 1. Spring fever is in the air, evidenced by the fact that both the Canada geese and local farmers have been observed circling fields looking for a likely spot to land and begin production for the 2008 season. It was all quiet at Alley Cuts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last week, as both Lori McLaen and Jen Christianson were in New York City –Yes, that’s right, NEW YORK CITY!- picking up information on the newest hair styling fashions and the latest beauty tips to bring back to their clients here. Folks who happened to be watching the NBC-TV show on Friday morning noticed Lori & Jen holding up a large banner reading “Good Luck Queen Candidates, Rutland ND”, during one of Al Roker’s weather reports outside Rockefeller Center on Manhattan. Lori and Jen returned home on the evening of Monday, March 17, and were back at work at Alley Cuts on Tuesday morning. They report that, despite its reputation for fashion leadership, they did not find many new or interesting hair styles among the ladies of the city that never sleeps. They did, however, enjoy a large number of sights and experiences, including: the Statue of Liberty; Ellis Island; a Broadway musical, “Chorus Line”; the Staten Island Ferry; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; fine dining at some excellent restaurants; and, many others. The 2 country girls stayed with a friend of Jens who put them on the subway on their first morning there, gave them instructions on where to get off, and told them to walk back home to experience the city. They walked through Chinatown and Little Italy, where no one spoke English, and window shopped along 5th Avenue. They had a great time, Lori reports, but they were glad to get home. New York, with its crowds, fast pace, constant activity and the sights, sounds and smells that go with a huge metropolis, is a great place to visit but they wouldn’t want to live there. Welcome home, Lori & Jen.

Rutland on Today Show

For a brief instant Rutland appeared on the Today Show on Friday, March 14. Lori McLaen and Jen Christianson traveled to New York for a few days on the town. Friday morning they were in the Today crowd holding a Rutland sign. Jen was next to a woman who practically broke down the fence to hug Meredith when she came near. Although Jen missed hugging Meredith, she did get a good photo of Ann Curry who was in for Matt last Friday. They did not make it on the first hour so they can’t be seen on the Today Show website but they have TiVo to prove they were there!

Woolly Women in Forum

Imagine opening up the Sunday Fargo Forum and finding Rutland mentioned on the first page of the Valley R&R Section! That’s exactly what happened when I opened the paper and saw our very own Jan Brash pictured with other “Woolly Women.”  Jan has been involved with the “Woolly Women” since 2000 and says she has learned a lot about sheep and working with wool. She also enjoys the camaraderie that the group shares.

Pageant Queen

Rutland Pageant ContestantsFriday, March 14, about 200 individuals gathered in the Rutland City Hall for the Community Club annual dinner and program. This year’s event was the Mr. Rutland Pageant 2008. Nine local beauties vied for the coveted crown: Tammy Whynott, Patti Link, Sandy Aggregate, Purrza Wildcat, Barbie Bootcamp, Helga Haybuster, Raquel Wrench, Sally Skrooz, and Amelia Hothams. The contestents wowed the audience with their beauty and poise and impressed us during the talent show with song, poetry and fashion sense. The show, complete with a mezmerizing swimsuit competition, included a well-choreographed chorus routine performed while the entire audience placed their votes for the winner. The 1980 First Runner Up, Ima Hogg, took her last walk on the runway before passing the crown to Barbie Bootcamp. DVDs of the pageant will be available for sale soon (check the Rutland ND website for details on sale items).
